The Cradle to Cradle Certified program is a third party, multi-attribute eco-label administered by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute that assesses a product's safety to humans and the environment and design of future life cycles.

• ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free)

Pulp bleached without the use of chlorine gas.

• EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme)

The European Union regulated environmental management system. Participating organisations regularly produce a public statement that reports on their environmental performance. EMAS recognises organisations that go beyond minimum legal compliance and continuously improve their environmental practices.

• Environmental Choice

In New Zealand, Environmental Choice is the official environmental label. The programme operates independently from the government but the label is government owned and endorsed.

• FSC (The Forest Stewardship Council)

Is an independent, non-governmental, not for profit organisation established to promote the responsible management of the world's forests. Products carrying the FCS® label are independently certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations.

• ISO 14001 (International Organisation for Standards)

ISO is a worldwide organisation that develops many different kinds of standards. ISO 14001 specifies the requirements for an EMS which provides a framework for an organisation to control the environmental impact of its activities and to continually improve their performance.

• Mill Broke

Paper trimmings and other scrap paper from the manufacturer of paper that is recycled internally in a paper mill.

• Paper Recycling

Is the process of recovering waste paper and remaking it into new paper products. There are three categories of paper that can be used for making recycled paper.

PCF (Process Chlorine Free)

Applies to recycled paper which has been produced without the use of chlorine chemicals in the recycling process.

• Pre-Consumer Waste

Materials that was discarded before it was ready for consumer use.

• Post-Consumer Waste

Material discarded after consumer use such as old magazines, old telephone directories and residential mixed paper.

• REACH

Is the European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006). It deals with the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemical substances.

• RoHS

The National Measurement Office (NMO) Enforcement Authority is an appointed market surveillance authority responsible for enforcing four European directives within the UK. The directive on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment 2002/95/EC (commonly referred to as the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive or RoHS).
